William James Blandford and Mary Anne Lacey
William James Blanford ( also spelt Blandford ) is my great grandfather on my mums side of the family. He was born on the 17 September 1873 in the parish of Poplar, in Middlesex England
His parents were James Blanford and Mary Ann nee Gore
William missed being in any English census but his older siblings were in the 1871 Census with both his parent James and Mary Ann Blandford
On the 13 August 1874 he sailed with his family from London on the St Vincent arriving in Plymouth on 21 August 1874. He left there for Australia arriving in Port Adelaide , South Australia on 5 November 1874. The records show they spelt there surname with a “d” Blandford
On the St Vincent were James Blandford 33
Mary Ann Blandford nee Gore 28
Mary Blandford 7
Emma Blandford 5
William James Blandford infant
The family who arrived in Adelaide were missing one child ,Elizabeth didn't come and therefore must have died in England. There is an Elizabeth Blanford who died in poplar age 2 in December 1871 and an Elizabeth Blandford age 1 who died in poplar September 1871. She could have been either of these, but more likely the 1 year old? Just a Guess
Why did James and Mary take there family to Adelaide SA and not go straight to New Zealand as his father and most of James siblings were now living their

The next lot of information I have on William James Blandford was when he married Mary Anne Lacey on 26 February 1900 at St Marys of the Angels, Boulcott street in Wellington New Zealand
He was 27 years old and Mary Anne was aged 23 when she got married
Mary Anne Lacey was born 1877 in Wellington NZ Registration Number 1877/1161 folio # 283 , her parents were Nicholas Lacey and Mary Jane Lacey nee Reid
Mary Ann Lacey spent 4 years to become a nun,she wore the white veil but did not wear the black veil. The ladies in Gisborne raised money to build a Hall . A priest came and said it belonged to the church and the head nun or sister said “ no” The priest had his way. All the nun`s left ,the head one going back to Ireland ..Mary Anne returned to her parents in Wellington. It is there that she met and later married William James Blanford. She had to get permission from the Pope in Rome ,it was given subject to any children being brought up in the Catholic faith possibly becoming nuns or priests
She was a tailor
