My Great Great Great Grandfather was James Blanford , he was born 18 July 1841 in Bow Common England . His Parents were James Blanford and Catherine nee Morris

In The England & Wales BDM Index 1837 to 1915 there is a birth for a James Blandford and the details match our James ,the right month time frame and year
Name James Blandford
Date of Registration July to September 1841
Registration district Stepney
County London Middlesex

but I cant find a birth document or record at any of the sites I would think to find one such as ancestry.com or familysearch.org and you would think that he was on the Tower Hamlets BDM site as his older sidling Edward Gray Blandford is and all his younger siblings are and Stepney is in the Tower Hamlet area so you would think he would be there.
Part of a Email I got from an person researching the Blandford tree reads as follows
“She did tell of a story that Lord Gray Blandford sent his illegitimate son James Blandford to NZ as a remittance man, but I don't know about the truth of that. I haven't heard of a Lord Gray Blandford????”
A Remittance Man …..A British immigrant who was supported by Remittance from Britain
Remittance......The sending of money or credit to a person
My family also told me a story that they had heard about the Blandford family
When the Blandford first came to New Zealand they spelt their surname without a “D” Blanford At sometime a Lawyer came to New Zealand asking for them they thought it was bad news so said No we are not the Blanford you are looking for we spell our surname with a “D” Blandford.....They do not to this day know what information the Lawyer had Good or Bad
Do I need to get the James Blandford birth certificate from English BDM ,could this James and not his father be illegitimate or a remittance man
James married Mary Ann nee Gore on 15 November 1863 in Stepney England
I brought the original from Tower Hamlets BMD web site
This web site has a free searchable database of Birth , Death and Marriages in the Tower Hamlets area of London, once you find your certificate you can order online. Certificates are £9.00 each plus a small statutory fee
This is a paid site so I cant show you the original on my web site but if you would like to see the copy I have, contact me M Hyde at

James and Mary Ann Blanford had one more child ( my great grandfather ) while living in England
William James Blanford was born 17 September 1873 in Middlesex England and died 20 October 1938 in Wellington New Zealand. He married Mary Ann Lacey at St Marys in Wellington on the 26 February 1900.
A year after there son William James birth in England, James and Mary Ann Blanford with there family, sailed from London to Port Adelaide South Australia on the St Vincent Leaving London on the 13 August 1874 and arriving in South Australia on the 5 November 1874
For a copy of the St Vincent Passenger list you need to go to your local State library. I found a copy on microfilm at the Queensland State library so I would think most state libraries around the country would have it
Official passenger lists, mainly of immigrants arriving in South Australia under United Kingdom assisted passage schemes, 1845-1886
The microfilm number is (MFCB 929.39423 ) there were 132 microfiche in the set number 83 had the St Vincent on it
The original, known as Official assisted passage passenger lists, is held at State Records, reference number GRG 35/48A (formerly ACC 313)
These are the official passenger lists of emigrants selected by the Colonization Commissioners, and were sent to Crown Lands and Immigration Department on arrival in South Australia. Lists give passengers' names, and most give ages, occupation and marital status ; some give country of origin. Not all lists have survived.
To look at the original you must go to the library as they are not online

Did James Blanford work or be given a piece of Crown Land ??
From the ship records one of the children was missing, we think Elizabeth must have died in England but we don’t have any records to confirm this
Why did James and Mary Ann go to Australia when his father and his family had gone to New Zealand 6 month earlier on the La Hogue ?
For more information on the La Hogue go to
http://blanfordfamilytree.weebly.com/the-la-hogue.html
I have very little information on James and his family in South Australia ,I don’t know what he did for work and the only clues on where he lived were on his daughters death records
Last residence: Alberton and she was buried at Cheltenham Cemetery, South Australia.
While in South Australia his family grew
Children
Joseph Henry was born 29 August 1875 in Adelaide. There is a death recorded for a Joseph in 1876 aged 1. I think this is him?
Phoebe was born 24 June 1877 in Adelaide and she died 3 March 1970
Unfortunately for James and Mary Ann Blanford there daughter Mary Ann Blanford died on 29 June 1877 age 9, and was buried at Cheltenham Cemetery, South Australia. Last residence: Alberton
In December 1877 after only spending 3 years in Australia James and Mary Ann Blanford and family left Australia and sailed to New Zealand on The Ringarooma
This is all I have for the Rimgarooma, if you have any more information please contact me

On the 2nd June 1883 there was a fire in Adelaide street at properties owned by James Blanford. Later in the month on the 25 June 1883 there was an inquest into the circumstances of the suspicious fire in Adelaide street at properties owned by James Blanford , in the inquest it said he was a Blacksmith.
James sister Sarah Blandford must have also lived in Adelaide road because from her house she saw the fire, she did then rouse her brother who got up and went out
Was he living with her???
The Coroner said that there was sufficient information to show the fire was wilfully set but nothing to prove by whom the fire was set

The Properties must have been owned by himself and brother John as on the 8 February 1884 John took the company who insured the the buildings South British Insurance Company to the District Court for recovery of the Sum of 100 pounds for unpaid insurance monies.
The last part of the news clipping reads “ his Honour ordered a nonsuit to be entered up with costs” Unfortunately for John I think this means he lost the case and may have lead in part to being declared Bankrupt a year or so later
James mother ,Catherine Blanford died on the 6 September 1885 in Wellington and was buried in the Bolton Street Cemetery Wellington New Zealand, his father James Blanford (senior) died on the 21 July 1896 in Wellington New Zealand and is buried at the Karori cemetery .
James Blanford Jun was still living in Adelaide road in the 1890 Electoral roll but was working as a labourer , his brother William who now had a family was living in Alfred street, as was George. In the 1890 NZ Directory there was a James and George Blanford living in Alfred street, this James must have been James Blanford Senior because in the 1893 Electoral roll James Blanford junior was still living in Adelaide street
